Creators: Meet Noella of Issues

I had the pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Noella Teele in the new ISSUES location at Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 40th Street. We love working with Noella and Joe, the founders of ISSUES, and have had their #IssuesAnnex in the Viscera shop for almost a year now. Read more to find out how they started their business and what keeps Noella going. Ari How do you describe yourself? What do you do? Noella I am first and foremost the co-owner of issues, which means I'm here a lot. I take care of all the back end things and admin everything...

My Maker Story

For those of you who haven't met me yet,  I'm Ari, the owner/founder/designer/maker/shopkeep at Viscera. Over the last two and a half years I've been busy building the shop and brand, but realized I never really stopped to tell you about myself as a maker. I've talked a lot on this blog about being your own boss and a ton about how to organize and minimize your stuff, but I haven't talked much about creativity from the lens of 'play' and the importance of making things. Women in Business: Lisa Iwamoto

Lisa Iwamoto is an award winning architect and a professor at UC Berkeley. Her firm, Iwamoto Scott, leverages digital fabrication and a computational approach to design to create uniquely beautiful spaces. Lisa was kind enough to sit down for an interview with me in her San Francisco office and talk about her path to becoming an architect, business-owner, and educator. I loved interviewing Lisa. I went to UC Berkeley for my Masters in City Planning and always was blown away by the work Lisa’s studio would produce. It was amazing to be able to connect with her not just as...

Viscera Artist: Meet Leo

I'm happy to introduce Leo Cameron Felix, our first Viscera artist of 2017! Leo creates imagery using nails, screws, and wire to "draw" three dimensionally. His work is striking (pun intended) and really does need to be experienced in person to fully capture the intricate beauty of his art. When Leo isn't busy creating art, he is a practicing architect in San Francisco. I got to ask Leo some questions about his background and his work in preparation for our opening reception on First Friday-- plus you get a little sneak peek into his studio in the Mission.  Where are you...

#EverydayReal: Photoshoot with Christie & Jeff

If you're on our e-newsletter, you might remember a little while back I asked our wonderful real-life customers to be part of our #everydayreal campaign. I have so many interesting, creative and stylish customers that shop at Viscera that I wanted to highlight them and how Viscera items fit into their lives. Being yourself is a powerful thing in a world filled with photoshopped Kardashians and impossibly perfected instagram feeds. To show the power of authenticity and well, being real,  we didn't photoshop any of these images. What you're seeing is real life and it's wonderful and vibrant. To be fair, we...
